This is another Tanzanian unique and beautiful world heritage site, it was once a gigantic volcano and is the largest caldera. Its eruption formed a colossal caldera, the wild animals inside are virtually locked inside and contrary popular to misconception that the animal’s can freely walk inside and outside through loopholes.
Nearly 3 million years old the ancient caldera is home to the most beautiful wildlife sanctuary on earth with plenty of water and juicy grass. Its believed that before the eruption that it would have been higher than Mt Kilimanjaro and in contrast to other excavation sites , Ngorongoro is open to the general public as you may walk down the ravine and stand at the same place where the first hominid’s stood many years ago.
